She captivated Europe. She captivated the Staffordshire potters. She'll captivate your home.

This elegant Victorian Staffordshire flatback equestrian figurine depicts the Empress of France — almost certainly Empress Eugénie, the Spanish-born wife of Napoleon III whose beauty, style, and influence made her one of the most celebrated women in Europe during the 1860s. She rides side-saddle in flowing white, a green veil trailing dramatically from her hat, the imperial saddle cloth decorated in the distinctive French imperial pattern.

Empress Eugénie was enormously popular in Victorian Britain — admired for her elegance, her friendship with Queen Victoria, and her role as Europe's great tastemaker. The Staffordshire potters responded to that fascination by immortalizing her in clay for Victorian mantlepieces across England.

The base is titled "Empress of France" — making this an unusually well-documented and desirable portrait figure.

France's most glamorous Empress. England's most beloved pottery tradition. Your home.
