A story of war, loyalty, and the forgotten women of the battlefield.

This exceptional Victorian Staffordshire flatback group depicts a Vivandière — the remarkable women who followed Napoleonic armies across Europe, carrying provisions and spirits to soldiers in the field. Here she stands beside a mounted officer in his white military uniform and plumed hat, her colorful dress painted with delicate floral detail, canteen at her side.

The Vivandière was a celebrated figure in Victorian popular culture — romanticized in theatre, literature, and art. This Staffordshire group captures that fascination beautifully. The modeling is notably detailed for the period — two figures, a horse, rich polychrome decoration — making this a more complex and desirable piece than the typical single equestrian flatback.

The base is titled "Vivandiere" in classic Staffordshire lettering. Circa 1860s.

A piece of social history. A collector's find.
